How to change Apple TV Region

Whether you’ve moved countries, travelling or looking to download some region-specific content on your Apple TV such as Disney+, you’re likely going to want to change your TV’s digital location.

To keep things simple, Apple uses a number of factors to geo-lock its devices, which goes beyond just physical location. What this means is that with a VPN alone, you still may be geo-locked due to your credit card’s location, or your Apple ID’s place of registration.

In this post, we’ll take a look at the simplest ways to change your Apple TV’s region, allowing you access to international content such as films, TV shows, apps and more.

How to Change Region on Apple TV

The process involves a few steps, however, with persistence and by following our simple steps, you’ll have little trouble changing your device’s location.

Apple TV 3rd Generation

On the 3rd Generation Apple TV, you’ll be glad to know that the process is a little simpler than for newer models. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Open Settings
2. Choose the iTunes Store
3. Under ‘iTunes Location’ select Location
4. Change the Region Displayed to the Region You’d Prefer
5. Restart the Device

Apple TV 4th Generation

Where things get a little more complex, though not impossible, is with the 4th Generation of the Apple TV. Through a few hardware and software changes, Apple has made geo-unlocking a little harder, though it’s still possible to change regions without too much work.

Here’s what you’ll need to do:

Leave your original iTunes account by choosing Settings, selecting iTunes Store and choosing ‘Sign Out.’ Once you’ve done this, your location-binding Apple ID/iTunes Account will be removed from the device.

Move on to the following to change regions:

1. On iTunes on the TV, computer, or website, scroll to the bottom of the web page and click on the flag in the bottom right – this is where you’ll be able to change location.
2. Once you’ve selected a country, return to the App Store and choose a free app to download, which will then prompt you to create a new Apple ID. Remember, create the ID in the country you’d prefer.
3. You’ll also need to create the new Apple ID with an email differing from your original.
4. When prompted for payment method, be sure to select ‘None’ unless you have a credit card from the country in question.
5. For an address, choose an address in the country you’re registering the Apple ID for – you can select one from Google Maps if you’re not too sure of an exact address.
6. Once the account is created, use it to log into your Apple TV.

There you have it. You’ll have an Apple ID from another country and an Apple TV with an entirely new region. You shouldn’t run into any log-in issues and all international  content from applications to TV shows and movies should become available.
