How to Watch ‘Baki’ in Order

Jessica Williams | Last Updated:

Baki is a well-known shounen anime adapted from a manga series by Keisuke Itagaki; its meteoric rise to fame hardly needs an explanation. The plot of Baki centres on the protagonist, Baki Hanma, a boxer who prepares to confront five death row inmates.

At 13, Baki began training independently to compete with and beat his father, Yuujirou Hanma. By age 15, he had won a championship in a no-rules arena. He has been dubbed “the world’s strongest boy” and “the champion of the Basement Area in Tokyo Dome.”

Due to the large cast of recurring and guest characters in Baki, the proper viewing sequence of the anime series might need to be clarified first. Here’s a quick rundown of the Baki episodes you should see, along with recommended pairings that will help you appreciate the show’s environment even more.

The Most Comprehensive Baki Watch Order

  • Baki The Grappler (2001)
  • Grappler Baki: The Ultimate Fighter (1994)
  • Baki The Grappler Season 2: The Ultimate Tournament (2001)
  • Baki: Most Evil Death Row Convicts Special Anime – Special Episode (2016)
  • Baki (2018)
  • Baki Season 2: The Great Raitai Tournament (2020)
  • Hanma Baki: Son of Ogre (2021-present)

The first season of Baki the Grappler chronicles the protagonist’s introduction to martial arts and the many people he encounters. The next item on the viewing schedule is a special anime episode that adapts the first two battles from the original manga.

This short film is optional viewing but does a lot for the tale and is entertaining. The central character of Baki is more lighthearted and flippant than he is in the anime series, which is a significant departure from the anime’s normal melancholy tone.

Season two of the anime will feature the world’s top fighters in the Tokugawa Underground combat ring, expanding upon the events of the one-shot. Baki is one of them and has made it his mission to win this year’s title.

The story of underground ring fighters in the no-holds-barred fighting atmosphere of death row prisoners continues in the following special episode titled Baki: Most Evil Death Row Prisoners Special Anime.

Then there’s Baki, which follows directly from Baki the Grappler and is set in a timeline following the Maximum Tournament. The general tone is rather magical and unreal, which is a departure from the norm for the series.

Season two picks off where season one left off, with Baki’s story continuing despite his injuries and weakness. He must compete in the Raitai Tournament, where his father is also entered, to discover a cure for his illness.

The last chapter continues with Baki, showing how the protagonist prepares to face his father in a battle. During this time, Baki also conflicts with a few other key characters, notably MR, a powerful prisoner in the Arizona State Prison.

The first season of this continuing series concluded in September 2021; however, the second season, which will be dubbed Pickle Wars Saga, has yet to be revealed. Keep checking back for the latest information on the comeback date for Hanma Baki: Son of Ogre.

Baki Filler Series: Your Ultimate Guide

1. Baki The Grappler: Childhood

This arc marks the first time the Baki manga has been adapted into animation; the adaptation remained faithful to the manga series but omitted a few chapters.

The 24 episodes in this arc explain why Baki has such a strong dislike for his father. Baki’s father sometimes taunts him about his power, but he continues to train hard to prove his father wrong.

As a result of his father’s taunting, Baki challenges him to a fight, but he loses horribly, and his mother rushes in to rescue him, only to be slain in the process. After the fight, Baki trains all around the globe to become more muscular, and eventually, he defeats a group of Tokyo’s most brutal men in a secret underground arena.

2. Maximum Tournament Saga

There are similar to 24 episodes dedicated to this plot arc. It highlights a global competition that is held in an underground stadium. There will be no discussion on the inevitable fights that will take place in a tournament.

This tournament has several plot points, including unexpected events involving many Maximum Tournament Saga competitors. In the end, however, Baki and his half-brother Jack Hanma get into a fight, including the secret of Jack Hanma’s conception.

3. Baki: Most Evil Death Row Convicts Saga

In this section, Baki Hanma works harder than ever to become as great as his renowned father. But things take a bizarre turn when five of the world’s most dangerous and infamous death row inmates break out and go to Tokyo to face up against the strongest high school kid in the world.

If you haven’t already, you should watch this arc on Netflix, especially since a little romance is hinted at. This storyline has two instalments, and you’ll want to catch both.

4. Baki: The Great Raitai Tournament Saga

Now in its fourth arc, the Great Raitai Competition Saga follows Baki and a cast of other characters, including his father, as they compete in an annual martial arts competition.

During this stretch, Baki is most vulnerable, almost on his deathbed. If you want to discover how he overcomes the difficulty, you’ll just have to see the anime.

Review the last story arc if you’re curious how he lost so much strength. If you want to stay up with the tale, following each arc as it’s presented is essential.

5. Hanma Baki: Son Of Ogre

This arc follows Baki as he works to enhance his strength while striving to catch up to his father. In the first episode of this series, Baki gets into a confrontation with a youngster.

That, however, is not the insanity. Even though Baki’s shadowboxing skills are incredible, he eventually ends himself in a high-security jail alongside some of the world’s most lethal inmates.

He comes here to make a statement and, more plainly, to rack up the body count he needs to one-up his powerful father. He enters the prison intending to do battle with the infamous Mr Unchained.

Baki Main Characters

You have now learned Baki’s plot. The moment has come to discuss some of the most prominent players in the show. Don’t be shocked if this anime doesn’t fit your preferred character type if you’re looking for a feminine protagonist. Okay, so let’s begin!

1. Baki Hanma

The male protagonist of Baki is named Baki Hanma. He embarks on a quest to become even more potent than his father. Baki earned the title of “champion” because he was determined to replicate his father’s achievements by overcoming every challenge his father did.

His appearance is described as dark brown wavy hair and a height of 5 feet 6 inches (167 centimetres). In any case, as the plot develops, Baki develops muscles and puts them through training.

His solid physical constitution is his greatest asset. But in terms of his character, he is a free spirit who enjoys the open road. Baki is one of the most powerful characters in the show since he always gives 110% in training.

When it comes to his family, he has the utmost regard and affection. He is fiercely devoted to his family and would stop at nothing to ensure their safety. His intellect is a strength, allowing him to reason under extreme pressure.

He is a skilled martial artist his mom taught. His tenacity and toughness are admirable qualities. Even Baki can do a few neat stunts.

Baki was initially utilised for the first time against Gaia. Among his talents is the ability to execute rolling kicks. Check out the anime if you want to learn more about Baki.

2. Emi Akezawa

Akezawa is a mother who doubles as a martial artist. Besides his father, she has always been there for Baki and is his mother. She is entirely behind Baki and his choices. Because of this, she had high hopes that Baki could outwork his father with enough practice.

Emi Akezawa was born into a prosperous household. She’s kind, encouraging parent who did everything she could to instil confidence in her kid. This woman has so much charisma that many guys would kill to have her.

Emi Akezawa plays the ideal woman role and is an excellent mother to the main character. Think of how cool it would be if your mom were a martial artist, and she looked like this! You can have more than that about her without getting the whole plot, so that’s all you’re getting! Don’t worry about me giving anything away; watch Baki.

3. Yujiro Hanma

This person has become so powerful that even the anime’s strongest characters fear him. Yes, he is the patriarch of the Baki family and one of the most formidable figures in the anime. Hide beneath the covers if you see him out and about. His intimidating presence and overwhelming might strike dread into the hearts of his opponents. Can Baki finally beat this monster? He is widely regarded as the best boxer in the world. Think of his might in that light!

The anime’s primary bad guy, and Baki’s primary target, is Yujiro. He only wants to show his dad he’s better than him. Yujiro is a guy of strong emotions, both angry and proud. Since he is the greatest fighter ever, he thinks highly of himself and looks down on everyone else. If someone causes him significant distress, he is prone to take their life. Almost everyone bothers him soon.

He is emotionally motivated. He will murder for “satisfaction” if that’s what he wants. It may strike you as ominous. Whatever the case may be, Yujiro Hanma is done. Most wonder whether his kid has what it takes to beat him. Watch Baki and find out!

Should You Watch The OVAs For Baki?

Usually, OVAs are a small thing, and studios develop them as additional material for dedicated fans of a certain anime. Still, they’re also directed in a way that doesn’t significantly advance the story. The 2001 OVA is a compilation of old footage from the first series and some brand-new material, and it’s something you should feel free to watch.

The 2001 OVA does a terrific job of expanding the tale if you enjoyed the anime and thought it was entertaining. The 2016 OVA is just a prologue to the 2018 Netflix Baki adaptation; thus, go for something other than watching it.

Site Showing Baki Online

Look up the seasons online if you need help with the watch order. Netflix users can watch all episodes from the 2016 OVA and later, but they will have to look elsewhere for the first two series and the 2001 OVA.

Baki The Grappler seasons 1 and 2 are not officially available for streaming anywhere due to licensing difficulties. However, obtaining a Blu-ray copy of the animation from Amazon is the only viable option for now.
