History of ‘The Ancient Magus’ Bride’

The Ancient Magus’ Bride, or ‘Mahoutskai no Yome’, was first debuted as a manga series completely written and illustrated by the wonderful Japanese manga artist Kore Yamazaki in late 2013. The series was regularly published in the Monthly Comic Garden magazine and Monthly Comic Blade website until late 2019. At the time of writing, the full manga collection is comprised of thirteen volumes, which are still being released, and two light novels.

In 2016, an original video animation of The Ancient Magus Bride: Those Awaiting a Star was released by Wit Studio on Crunchyroll, with a total of three episodes. The anime series adaptation was quickly released a year later on Crunchyroll as well in October, 2017, with twenty-four total episodes running until March, 2018.

Main Storyline

The series follows the adventures of Chise Hatori, who finds herself desperate for a home as an orphaned high school student. After a chance encounter with a magus, a sorcerer of her world, who offers her a chance for a new life, which could end in great happiness, or devastation. Willing to try her odds, she sells herself at an auction to Elias Ainsworth, a powerful but reclusive mage, to become his apprentice. The story is unique in its plot, characters, and setting – taking place in Great Britain, its dark art style reminiscent of the Victorian era.

Main Characters

The protagonist of the anime is Chise Hatori, a high school student who has been largely ostracized by her community for her unique ability to attract spirits. Her parents both had the gift of sight, which led them to their tragic and violent demise.

The mage Elias Ainsworth is her mentor, appearing as a seven-foot humanoid with the head of an animal skull. Despite his kind nature, Elias still finds difficulty interacting with humans.

Chise’s familiar, Ruth, protects her and shares a mental connection with her, allowing him to see her dreams. He can also shapeshift from a human form to one of a huge black dog.

Upcoming ‘The Ancient Magus’ Bride’ in the 2021 Season

Fans are eagerly awaiting news for a second season of the anime series in early 2021, hoping that the new manga volume released in October, 2020 will provide more material for the anime to adapt.
