Network Speed

One of the key advantages that ExpressVPN has over many of it’s smaller competitors is it’s size. ExpressVPN is one of the largest vpn providers globally, which put simply means that it has the financial means to be constantly investing in top quality server software and hardware. This capability also extends to their team of Technical Engineers who constantly work at optimizing the ExpressVPN servers to deliver optimum speeds for their customers.

A key benefit of the service that ExpressVPN provides is that it offers unlimited speed and bandwidth for their connections. This is a critically important factor for users especially when streaming high definition videos or movies without any lag or interruptions.

We found ExpressVPN to be very open and upfront with the speeds capable of being achieved. In fact, they offer a Speed Test function that is available for Windows, Mac, and Android users to put their speed to the test.

To get started, simply select ‘Speed Test’ from the dropdown:

ExpressVPN - speed test - 1

The tool will then automatically detect your current location (or you can manually select it yourself via the ‘Location Picker’ function).

The next step is to simply kick off the test:

ExpressVPN - speed test - step 2

Once the test has completed, a detailed results set will be returned, with information about: Speed Index, Latency, and Download Speed.

ExpressVPN - speed test - step 3

We also really liked the (small but useful !) feature that allows users to keep track of their favorite/fastest server locations, by marking it with a Gold Star icon (see right hand column in image above).

Server Locations

Put simply, the number of vpn servers that ExpressVPN operates is huge. As of June 2017, they have 1,500 vpn servers across 94 different countries around the world. Listed below are just a few of the countries in which they have a vpn server presence:

ExpressVPN announced on 6 December 2017 that they have deployed new servers in the cities of Perth and Brisbane (Australia). This is futher evidence of their commitment to improving and extending their server and access capabilities for customers. You can read more about this story here.

VPN Protocol Support

For the vast majority of users, knowing which protocol to select is not required. When using any of their free apps, the VPN protocol is automatically selected and configured for the user.

However, ExpressVPN also offers support for all leading VPN protocols – for those that like to get under the hood and tinker with their VPN connection:

  • OpenVPN with UDP
  • OpenVPN with TCP
  • SSTP
  • L2TP/IPsec
  • PPTP

Logging Policy

ExpressVPN seeks to make it clear that they are first and foremost a privacy company, which means that customer internet privacy is their prime concern. We found it very encouraging that they are also very upfront in regards to what information they do / don’t collect from their customers using their VPN service.

Items Logged:

  • Date of connection to the VPN service
  • Choice of VPN Server location
  • Total amount of data transferred per day

ExpressVPN makes the point that this information is only required for purely admin purposes to monitor usage across their own network of servers, and to allocate network resources accordingly. They have stated to us that they do not monitor or log any personally identifiable information such as IP address or the Time stamp of which a user connects.

Items NOT Logged:

  • Browsing history
  • Traffic destination
  • Data content
  • DNS queries
  • Your original IP address that you connect from
  • Your outgoing IP address (i.e. the ExpressVPN IP assigned to you once connected)

To provide an extra layer of security for their vpn customers, their DNS servers are privately owned by ExpressVPN themselves. Furthermore, their DNS servers utilise ‘zero-knowledge’ functionality meaning that they do not log user DNS queries in any way.

Customer Service

ExpressVPN offers the standard modes of customer support for their clients. At present, these include:

  • Contact Form (average response time: a few hours)
  • Live Chat (instant response) – 24/7
  • Direct Email (average response time: a few hours)

So of course we put them to the test on these response time claims. So far we have tested them on their Live Chat response times (on the random occasion that we tested them) and found them to be excellent:

ExpressVPN - chat window

Once we initiated the Live Chat session, we were immediately greeted by a real life person – now waiting ! YES, it was an “immediate response” just as they claimed. We were indeed very impressed with their response times. However, we were even more impressed with the informed and intelligent answers that they were able to provide to a couple of basic (yet reasonably technical) questions that we threw at them.

For those that like to be as self sufficient as possible, we found their VPN Setup Tutorials section on their website to be quite comprehensive.

ExpressVPN - setup guides

They offer a good selection of documentation across most computer and technology hardware including: MS Windows (including individual guides for all Windows operating systems from Windows Vista onwards), Apple Mac, Android, iOS, Routers, Linux, Gaming Consoles, Routers, Smart TV … just to name a few. The documentation is presented in a clear and concise manner with simple steps / images to help get users up and running quickly. Additionally, many of the more popular setup guides included an embedded Video tutorial for those that prefer this method.

Supported Devices

It’s a fact that most of us today access digital content across multiple devices throughout our daily lives. It goes without saying then, that any good VPN service provider should offer a wide range of apps to support as many different types of these devices as possible.

Thankfully the good people at ExpressVPN do offer a good selection of apps specifically designed to work with your device of choice. Their current list of supported devices includes:

  • Windows
  • Mac
  • Android
  • iPhone
  • iPad
  • iOS
  • Routers
  • Linux
  • Blackberry

ExpressVPN - supported devices

<update: June 2017>
ExpressVPN have just released their newest apps:

  • Chrome Browser Extension
  • Firefox Browser Extension

These are both extremely handy apps that allow users to use the internet securely on public Wi-Fi hotspots. Furthermore, it protects sensitive information from your ISP, third parties, hackers, and malicious websites. It allows users to hide their IP address and location from the websites they’re surfing. And also importantly, it allows user to access content blocked by firewalls, filters, or censorship.

Company Location

ExpressVPN is based in the British Virgin Islands (BVI).

But while some people might incorrectly assume it is subject to the same laws and regulations as Britain, the BVI are in fact a self-governing group of islands located in the Caribbean, who’s citizens elect their own independent judiciary, national police force, and code of laws.

Unlike Britian, the BVI is NOT a signatory to the notorious “14 Eyes” group – which refers to the collection of 14 countries (Britain included) that share military and counter-terrorism information. The BVI does NOT share any information with any 14 Eyes country.

In our mind, being a BVI based company is a crucially important fact for those VPN users that are serious about internet security and maintaining online anonymity.

  1. I’ve been holidaying in China for last few weeks and have had no trouble with ExpressVPN. Works for me. Very happy indeed.

  2. I’ve tried a few different VPN providers for unblocking Netflix USA, but have had most success with expressvpn. Netflix access did stop working for a while earlier this year, but I contacted support, and they replied pretty quickly that the issue had been resolved.

  3. Installed this on all my devices and it’s been flawless. The bandwidth is great and their pricing tiers are heaps lower than their competitors, especially for the service offering. I normally don’t ever disconnect from it. Highly recommended.

  4. By the looks, it seems like ExpressVPN is one of the only truly trustworthy VPNs left. It acts like it too, their service is so fast and their uptime is almost permanent.
