TunnelBear ends support for legacy devices

As of this week, the TunnelBear team has ended support for older devices and software in favour of focusing on developing more comprehensive and secure software for the latest versions of Android, iOS, macOS and Windows.

The VPN service stated that the decision to cut support for ageing devices and older software versions was to ‘[make] sure you get the best TunnelBear experience’ and that the company was planning on ‘balancing our time between making great new features and fixing any issues that arise’ rather than wasting resources on older, outdated software versions that would ‘slow down our ability to make TunnelBear even better.’

Listed below are TunnelBear’s new minimum supported apps and software versions for all of the major mobile and desktop platforms:

Minimum App Version

  • TunnelBear for Android v137
  • TunnelBear for iOS 2.11.2
  • TunnelBear for macOS 3.6.2
  • TunnelBear for Windows 3.0

Minimum OS Version

  • Android 4.1
  • iOS 9.3.5
  • macOS 10.10.5
  • Windows 7 SP1

What About Older Devices?

If you happen to use device software or an app version that is older than the version listed above the team at TunnelBear stated that they won’t be assisting with any issues relating to their service until you update to the latest version – or switch to a newer device running the latest app and OS version.

Typically, major backend framework changes aren’t a factor that prevents older firmware versions from working, so if you happen to experience an issue with TunnelBear on your device be sure to check all other factors first. That could be your ISP, the device you’re using or even the result of switching networks.

TunnelBear did, however, give a compelling reason to always stay updated and that was to ‘ensure you have access to the latest features, improvements and security fixes.’ These reasons have become increasingly more important over the last few years as VPNs and hacks have begun happening more and more frequently.

Those of you who have older devices running older software or who may need some assistance updating their software versions can reach out to TunnelBear for some assistance with that. Their website has comprehensive guides on updating for all Android, iOS, macOS and Windows devices. You can check out their latest prices and offers here:
